Sometimes I go download crazy and end up with unknown music on my iPod. This addiction provides for funny what-the...!? moments on the bus. These moments leave me wiggling with excitment in my seat as I dig through my bag because I must know the title of the song asap. My latest what-the...!? moment was on Friday. "Wet Paint?" Where did this track come from? I have no idea, but I know that I like it.

Aloha percussionist Cale Parks has a solo album titled Illuminated Manuscript coming out on September 26th. Count with me: that's one day away. This song is full of low hums, gentle taps, jingles and jangles, and sweet vocals. This one song has made me very excited to hear the entire album which I anticipate will be great for cold, rainy days.

"What is this?" You ask. Why, it's simply the best video ever made. Let's not argue about this.

I haven't seen a music video in ages, but I imagine that videos nowadays rarely reach the scale of cleverness as Michel Gondry's filmwork for Bjork's torch song "Bachelorette." It has an innocent Bjork in the starring role, a mustachioed vilanous lover, cardboard scenery, and a play within a play within a play. What could be better?

Speaking of all things Icelandic, if you happen to have an extra $700 lying around, you should fly to Iceland this October for the two day Airwaves festival. Some of the featured bands include Wolf Parade, Tilly and the Wall, We Are Scientists, Cold War Kids, and The Go! Team. Plus an Icelandic band called Thugs on Parole. I'm sure they'll make the crowd say, "Uhh! Na-nah, na-nah!"

No, this post doesn't have any brand spakin' new buzzy news about Brendan Benson. I think he's still busy being a Raconteur. I have, on the other hand, been trying to figure out a study schedule that allows me to read, analyze, and retain information. Hegel is a rough read and Foucault is no joke. Really. Have you read Foucault? Check him out debating Noam Chomsky on the idea of human nature.* Moving on...

The other day, one of my classmates commented, "Yeah, Brendan Benson? I tried to get into him, but... not my thing. I don't get him."

"What?" I relied in obvious shock. "Brendan Beson? The crafter of pop gems that ooh and aah with sweet perfection?"

"I guess," he shrugged.

I guess? The above conversation is the result of a diet too heavy in Focault and not enough Benson. If my Last.fmchart updated itself--which it hasn't in the last 2 months--it would confess my current addiction with all things Brendan Benson. More specifically, my repeated listening of the song "Metarie." I'm not much for the line: "I've run out of gas and stuck like glue," so I prefer the "UK Version" from the song titled EP. It's not as "rocky," and has a little extra melancholy to it.

I see you seeing me, and I like what we see

Katie sent me Winter Miller's New York Times feature on Cat Power and her struggle with alcoholism and drug addiction. The article describes Chan Marshall's dark moments which she led to suicidal thoughts and the self-sabotaging of shows. However, Miller also acknowledges her slow climb into health, strong album sales, and live shows that leave audiences in awe. There seems to be this insistence that although Chan Marshall is dealing with her inner demons, she's not quite "better." Miller references her reliance on anti-depressents and her "kooky behavior... [and] awkward fidgeting" during shows. Maybe I'm reading too much into these references because I adored watching Chan Marshall on her current tour in support of The Greatest. Yet, there are still bad show reviews, which point to evidence of smaller battles yet to be fought. I should be more gracious because maybe Miller wants simply to underscore that the road toward recovery and self-love doesn't happen over night.

After selling over 100,000 copies of The Greatest, Matador has decided to re-release the album with brand spankin' new artwork and a lowered shelf price. I read Matador's press released and laughed out loud. Not so much at the record label, but at the obvious need to justify the new pressing to potentially outraged fans:

Anyhow, we know this is a sensitive subject for some of you. We're not intent on gouging Cat Power fans, but we are trying to be creative and competitive in a marketplace where it is becoming increasing hard to maintain the shelf life of a title for more than a couple of months. We really believe in Chan and are of the opinion that 'The Greatest' is one of those life affirming records that we have to get into the hands and heads of as many people as possible.

In other words: Go complain to someone else. Would people really be that up in arms? Are they? Even if The Greatest arrived on my doorstep in a brown paper bag, I wouldn't trade it for an "improved" model. I like pretty packaging as much as the next person, but it's the music that matters. At such great music it is.

Finian McKean @ Union Hall (NYC)

Union Hall in Park Slope, Brooklyn opened up right before I left New York. I haven't been inside, but I did peek through the windows and was curious about the dimly lit, book-filled bar. Union Hall looked impressive from the outside, and it's been confirmed that the inside is twice as nice. Drinks, good food, comfy couches, and bocce (?). If you're in New York, check out the new space and listen to good music at the same time. Finian McKean + Wild Palms play there tonight at 8:00 pm.

And... Pitchfork has confirmed that Justin Timberlake has indeed brought sexy back. As if you doubted.

Annuals on Breakthru Radio

Rachel interviewed Adam Baker of the much-blogged-about North Carolina band Annuals. There's interesting conversation around the music scene in North Carolina, finishing high school, and choir robes and cat heads. Here's an exerpt of my favorite part of the interview:

BTR: What can one expect from your live show that they may not see with other bands? I hear at one point you have three guys playing the drums?
AB: You can always expect an immense amount of energy from all of us. People have fainted and blacked out. We try and give it our all. We go to shows a lot and we see bands that are not energetic…you can listen to an album anytime. Every song we play sounds different. We switch around instruments all the time. We all sing and all that stuff. You can expect six people giving their all.

So the boys of Iowa are back in the studio preparing their first full-length album. Here's the official update from the band's myspace page:

Coming up for air, thought we'd say hello.

The band has just started pre-production for our full-length record, which will feature some of the old and some of the new, as we see fit, of course. After years of waiting, we finally found a 'proper' practice space, and while cold and uninviting at this point, with time it will feel like home. Step 1: Comfy couch. Step 2: 60 inch plasma screen. Step 3: All the videogames ever.

Daytrotter & No Data

I'm currently obsessed with Daytrotter. Have you visited lately? Not only does the site host fantastic album reviews and original artwork, but also weekly band features. These features are (hands down) the best thing happening musically on the Internet right now. Bands drop by the Daytrotter studio, record four live tracks, talk about their music and the daily nitty gritty of being recording artsits. The interviews are intimate and true and often funny. My favorite part is probably the commentaries that bands give for the songs they selected to play for the session. My favorite song description so far is SSLYBY's explanation for "Oregon Girl:" “[It's] supposed to sound like a chase scene through an airport. Think of the McCallisters barely catching their plane to France in ‘Home Alone.’"

It's another way to feel connected.

March Into Flames

In high school, I had a drawing of a militant Ramona Quimby. She was holding a school book in her left hand while her right hand was poised solidly over her head in a fist. Above her were the words: "Riot Equals Not Quiet." Naturally, the letter Q was drawn with the necessary cat whiskers and ears.

Finest Dearest is definitely not quiet. They are now the louder, more defiant Romona. Finest Dearest is still the girl in her neat plaid skirt, buttoned-up cardigan, but with dirty knees and untied shoes. She's been digging in the dirt and has emerged more confident, raw, and ready to go toe-to-toe with the best of them.

I don't know if these songs are in their "final production" phase (i.e., mastered and what-not). However, I like these tracks as is. I think the unfinished quality adds a rougher edge to these gems.

Right now, I want you to mute your internal diatribe about the factory feel of pop music and the pointless nature of the media machine. This song? It's a keeper.

Mattresses Underwater

I'm a big fan of cheesiness, so I want to point out three things about today: 1) I am waiting for my mattress to be delivered. 2) It's pouring. 3) I'm listening to the track "Mattresses Underwater." Funny coincidence? I think so.

I do not know much about the Oxford, Mississippi band Colour Revolt, but I do know that I'm hooked. Their self-titled EP is set to be re-released by Tiny Evil on September 12th; however, the making of the original EP is an interesting story:

"But it was outside any proper studio that the songs on the Colour Revolt EP took form. Scheduled to record in a friends basement in Jackson, Mississippi in late August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the same weekend, pushing storm evacuees into the recording space. With nowhere to record in a city lacking electricity, the band set up shop with a ProTools rig in the living room of the owner of Esperanza Plantation, a small local record label, also home to the band. Forced into a DIY approach, the band used a pair of pantyhose as a windscreen and built a vocal booth out of spare cardboard boxes and leftover brooms."

I'm sure the extreme conditions, both physical and emotional, play a role in the intensity exhibited by frontman Jesse Coppenbarger on the track "Mattresses Underwater." The vocals move from whispery to unstrung while guitars talk softly back and forth before ending into swirling reverb. It's pretty, loud, epic and will satisfy your need to rock out.

On Tour: The Submarines

The indie cuteness that are The Submarines will tour this fall with French new wavers Nouvelle Vague. Since the release of their album Declare a New State!, The Submarines (Blake Hazard and Jack Dragonetti) have been very busy. So far, they have recorded an iTunes sessions with CYHSY producer Adam Lassus, completed a remix project of their debut album, and produced a "The Life Aquatic-esque" music video for their song "Peace and Hate." The albums are slated for an autumn release, but the you can watch the video now.

Who We Are

Greetings from Madison, Wisconsin.

Here's my first post of many from the lake-filled city in the North. New York is no longer home; however, Indie Don't Dance will continue.

Hopefully.

I'm setting up my new room in my new apartment. I didn't think it was possible to have a bedroom smaller than the closet-sized ones that are notorious in New York, but I've been proven wrong. However, a deck off of one's bedroom, a full-sized kitchen, and a livingroom with bay windows is nothing to sniff at.

Hockey Night is providing the soundtrack to my evening as I unpack my things. The folks at Daytrotter have three live tracks up, including "Who We Are." If you haven't heard this song yet, you must download it now. It's (hands down) Hockey Night's best song. Honest. Plus, if you've had the opportunity to hear this song live, it's a real treat. The boys played this song during their show at Mercury Lounge in May and proved that they are setting a more mature course for their musical future. Great things are in the works.

If my posts had tags, one of the most popular ones would be "Mac Problems." I bought a new MacBook and in the last 48 hours, I have had two appointments at the Genius Bar. I'm starting to lose faith in the old Apple. Following the advice of Cindy Hotpoint, I took The Boy Least Likely To's personality test. Life is looking a little brighter now that it's been confirmed that I'm a fierce little kitten. Grrr. I could have come up as a purple sludge, and that's is definitely a) not cute, and b) would not have brought any sunshine to my day.

To add to my day--that brightened considerably--this ditty from The Poems showed up in my inbox. I don't normally find songs about eventual heartbreak to be particularly inspiring; however, this Scottish band did something for me today. Maybe it's the strings or the soft vocals.

And the excitement from my yesterday was the release of full-length Anti-Anti from Snowden. Pitchfork 7.2-ed it, which is lower than I would score the album. But will let that rest. I do, however, agree that the title track teases you with its sexiness while mocking you the entire time. "We keep it simple but make it more complex/We are anti-movements/We are anti-anti/One time we believed, but now it's passe and cliche."

Little Sounds

The worst thing about packing is that everything gets placed neatly into boxes. Those boxes are then sealed and stacked into a corner waiting for their time to be carried to the post office. Topping my list of "Saddest Things Ever" is packing up an air condition-less apartment in complete and total silence.
Fortunately, Flameshovel is streaming upcoming releases from some of their bands. The streams include the upcoming full-length Be Where I Be from my latest iPod favorites Judah Johnson. I had forgotten that I had tucked this CD in my bag, but found it this summer while I was shuffling around Queens. I like the clever lyrical play on the track "Little Sounds." The Spinners sang about a light at the end of the tunnel; however, Judah Johnson sings "Ooh, child, it won't get easier/it won't get brighter." The album is electronic, poppy, and atmospheric. And other adjectives that you are more than welcome to add to my list.

Interview with The Envy Corps

Oh, New York. The Envy Corps is here. And they have brought grand music along with them. Who are they? Well, sit down for this little tale.

This indie quartet created a small sensation in the Midwest even before the release of their debut EP I Will Write You Letters If You Tell Me To. As show attendance grew from a few on-lookers to sing-a-long crowds, The Envy Corps established themselves as a band to be known. At least in their neck of the woods. In an effort to expand upon their homegrown success, Iowa's finest found a working van and made their way to New York City. With them, the band has brought along a desire to make their mark outside of their home state, a witty way with lyrics and chords, and an insatiable appetite for glossy magazines and canolis.

Before the band's arrival in the city, I had the chance to conduct a phone interview the Luke and Brandon of The Envy Corps. They let me give alternative (i.e., faulty) interpretations of song lyrics, ask nonsensical questions, and pry into the daily life of musicians. Basically, they humored me. The following interview is between Luke, Brandon, and me. Since I'm an interivew novice, it was much too difficult to note who was responding to specific questions. So, consider Luke and Brandon to be an uber-entity. It works. Trust me.

You guys are making the big trip to New York. Have you been here before?
We were there a while ago, but that was only once. In some ways this is the first time, but in other ways it's not.

Are you nervous about playing for a New York audience. We can be a little tough. We stand and stare a lot.
(Laughs) I've heard about that. I guess maybe a little. I guess we're more nervous about how we'll be received. In New York, there's a lot to chose from, so people can be picky. Bands have to prove themselves. We're also not that glamorous. We don't have a "thing" that we do, you know? We're not, like, all decked out like The Strokes. Hopefully, New York will be fine with that.

Not all bands in New York wear catchy outfits. Some bands are pretty dirty.
Oh yeah, we're sure! (Laughs) We like The Strokes, and dirty bands, too! We just don't have a thing that we do, other than play really good music. Hopefully, people will realize how we are able to play different types of music. That not all of our songs sound the same. I think that's boring. When you listen to a band, but every song they play could potentially be the same song.

That's what I like about your EP. The songs change in tone, but it shows how versatile you are.
Yeah, we're versatile. People really like songs like "Rhinemaidens" or "Story Problem." But the songs that I'm most proud of are probably the songs that are not the dancey songs that most people like. We can do fun, poppy dance songs, but we can also do some other substantive stuff.

I've read some reviews of your EPs, and you get compared to British bands a lot. Bands like Coldplay and...
New Coldplay or old Coldplay? We like old Coldplay. New Coldplay is pretty awful. (Laughs)

True. Very true. But it's not so bad to be compared to old Coldplay, even if you don't really sound like them.
Yeah. We like Coldplay and other British bands, too. But I think we do our own thing, we don't sound like them. But that's what people do. They compare you to other bands so that people can get some sort of idea of what you sound like... Even if they are wrong! (Laughs) Did I mention that we like Coldplay?

You like Coldplay, and I read on your myspace page that you also like baked goods. What's that about?
(Laughs) I don't know! Yes, I do. People just started bringing them. I don't know...

What should the people of New York bring to your show?
Well, since we're in New York, we really should get some canolis. Like, real homemade canolis. Or carrot cake.

Would you like the carrot cake to have the fancy cream cheese frosting carrots on top?
They do that? Oh, yeah they do! That would be great. I like the cream cheese frosting.

Anything with cream cheese frosting?
No, definitely carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. And canolis. We usually end up sharing these baked goods with people after a while. You know what would be great? If one day we just started a big food fight at one of our shows. Then people would be like, "Hey, remember that Envy Corps show we went to and there was that big food fight? That was great..." (Laughs)

You don't need fancy costumes like The Strokes if you have food fights.
That's very true.

I'm not the only person who asks you strange questions, am I?
No, people ask us some funny stuff. (Laughs) People like to ask about the Chinese twins in the band. I'm like, Chinese twins? What Chinese twins? Oh, you mean Scott and David? They're not twins, and they're definitely not Chinese! Don't ask us about the Chinese twins. We don't have any.

They are not Chinese. They are not twins.
Exacutly. Discuss.

So, when you're not "being a band," what are you up to?
(Lots of laughter)

Am I allowed to ask that question?
Oh, yes. You're allowed to ask. Well, we do lots of things. One of us works at a video rental store. Like a Blockbuster. Another... well, I own a janitorial business. (Laughs) It's very glamourous.

Do you get to tour a lot since you have "day jobs?"
We definitely do not tour as much as we want to. Touring is what makes all of this very real to us. But it's hard because we all have jobs and you can't just take off for a few weeks to play some shows. Plus, we do everything by ourselves.

You record and distribute your EPs on your own?
Yeah. We're not signed to a label, so we have to do everything on our own. That takes a lot of time.

How did the recording of Love Letters come about?
It took a long time. We were recording whenver we had time. It would be, like, "Hey, you want to come over and lay down the guitar track?" There was no deadline, so we just kept reworking songs and doing things over and over. But then, more and more people started coming to our shows, and people really wanted an album from us. That was good because it really pushed us to finish the EP and get something out. After people starting asking for music, the EP came together pretty quickly.

Well, I'm glad the EP came out because, honestly, it's one of the best EPs I've heard. You really deserve any and all attention you receive.

I have returned to my wonderful home called Brooklyn after six long weeks in Queens. Queens was lovely, but I missed my neighborhood. I returned to my apartment building on Monday to find my entire block under construction. The locks had been changed and the mailboxes are now blocked off by those hideous blue construction walls made of flimsy plywood. After "breaking in" to the construction site (which consisted of sliding back a gate), I collected my pile of mail and flopped down on my couch. It is good to be home.

Let me tell you about my mail: There's tons of it. I wish I could say that I am excited to tear through the piles of cushy envelopes and rip out the albums that are waiting for me to give them a listen. But... I'm tired, you guys. Really tired. But here's one thing in my inbox that cuts through the fatigue and motivates me to post. Here's what I've got:

The Bound Stems' EP The Logic of Building the Body Plan received some love and featured one of my favorite songs of last year "Wake Up, Ma and Pa Are Gone." Aah... Sometimes checking one's email inbox leads to indescribable bliss. What's the causes of my latest joy? I've edited out all the salutations and technical pleasentries, but the main point of the email is still there. Read on, my dear readers, read on:

The Envy Corps is going to be playing (currently unannounced) NYC August 15th & 16th (on Tuesday the 15th acoustic as a part of Cross-pollination at Piano's upstairs and on Wednesday the 16th at Sin-E, 9pm).

What's that? The Envy Corps? Yes, that's right. My most recent obsession is leaving the comfort of the Midwest and heading to New York City in August.

To say that I am beyond excited is an understatement. To be honest: I did a little dance across the room and probably squealed a few times on the phone. I would also like to point out that not only is the band playing two shows, but also one of those shows is a Cross-Pollination set. Hands down, I these weekly acoustic shows are a big part of what makes the music scene in New York so amazing.

So, ladies and gentlemen of NYC, where will you be on August 15th and 16th? Next to me singing along? I thought so.

Tobias Froberg

His story sounds eerily like that of Jose Gonzalez. An artist from Sweden that no one here has ever heard of gets his song on an electronics commercial (granted, no where near as cool as Jose's Bravia commercial) and gets a good amount of press and airplay in the States. Leaves Sweden for small US tour.

That story is the story of Tobias Froberg. A Swede with great pop sensibilities. This is wonderful little pop song that I think you will enjoy.

Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man

My first exposure to Leonard Cohen was through Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah." When I first heard Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," I hated it. I didn't understand it. It was too weird for me. I didn't like his whole talking thing. But, over time, his albums stayed with me and I enjoyed them more and more. I came to love his lyrics, particularly on songs like "Suzanne" and "Chelsea Hotel No. 2." For a while, The 2 disc Essential Leonard Cohen was a fixture in my car, perfect for sitting in traffic with the windows down.

I was incredibly excited to see the Lian Lunson documentary, "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man." Partially because it was about the great LC and partially because the guest stars read like my ipod: Antony, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, and U2. I saw the movie last night and loved it. It is a great mix of documentary and concert film. The performances of the artists covering Leonard Cohen are great. Antony's "If It Be Your Will" was particularly moving as was Rufus Wainwright's "Hallelujah" (although secretly I was hoping they would dig up some old footage of Jeff Buckley performing it live). But the best performance of the movie was an incredible version of "Tower of Song" with Leonard Cohen backed by U2.

The soundtrack comes out tomorrow (July 25th) and should be incredible. It includes all the songs played in the movie plus some extras. I am looking forward to this one.

Hi. How have you been? It's been a long time since we last chatted about music and other assorted topics. I've been "away" at my summer job teaching those, who some like to refer to as suckers, but I like to call beginning teachers.

So, what have you been up to? I'm sure Siren Music Festival was fantastic. And how about those Birdmonster shows and Dirty on Purpose's record release gig at Mercury Lounge? Mind blowing, that's what I heard. What's that? Oh, you're going to see Robbers on High Street on Wednesday. No, you're right. They are my favorite summertime band. No, no. I won't be there. Will I be at the Cat Power show instead? No, I'll still be here in Queens listening to Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous Girl" for the upteenth time. Or "Hips Don't Lie." Can't forget that one.

I've realized that I am the snobbiest of the music snobs. I've decided to embrace my snobbery after spending the last month feeling completely cut off from music that provides any aural pleasure. Don't get me wrong; Nelly and Justin are fine in small doses, but I've definitely exceeded my intake of Incubus. I'm feeling the need to reconnect to music that I actually enjoy. I've had Pearl Jam's "Alive" running through my head lately. Maybe the song has become a subconscious anthem as I relive dorm life and look ahead until August when I'll be able to rejoin the music scene. That was a funny comment, huh?

So, yes. I'm looking forward to August. Or at least near August because I might have to leave Queens to follow Sound Team and Cold War Kids around New York. Three shows in three days. I should at least make it to one, don't you think?

I have really been enjoying 5 songs from New Sense, a new band from Milwaukee. They have played sets with Phoenix and Voxtrot and are coming to LA to open up for The Little Ones. They sound great on record and use just the perfect amount of synthesizers and handclaps. This is great music for summer. Catchy and poppy, full of great hooks and bobbing your head. The Rakes, Every Move A Picture @ The Troubadour

I have been a bad music nerd this year. I have missed the boat on many artists mainly because I didn't have the time to research and download and listen like I have in the past. Sometimes, this is a big regret. Other times, not so much. Adam was in town and he got tickets to see The Rakes and Every Move A Picture last night at the Troubadour.

I had heard a total of one song by both bands combined. I did know that both were involved in the British post-punk scene and The Rakes wear their influences proudly on their sleeves. I just thought they weren't good. All of the songs sound exactly the same. The lead singer of the Rakes doesn't so much sing, but rather talk over great bassline and guitar riffs. I couldn't hear anything they were singing and I don't know if that was because of his thick accent or because the sound at the Troubadour sucks.

The lead singer also tries to be a really great frontman. I love a great frontman, but there is a fineline between entertaining and just looking stupid and he was flirting with the latter.

Don't get me wrong. Many people there left saying it was an amazing show. I was just not one of them. I have heard that the album is more reflective of their brilliance. I am not that pumped to check it out.

The true highlight of the show for me was seeing Average Joe 2 star David Daskal in the audience rocking out to both bands. Now that guy knows how to have a good time.

Bob Log III

About a year ago, I went to Tucson to visit my friend Adam. Coincinidentally, it was the 20th anniversary of Club Congress, a great music venue in the area. There were concerts all weekend, but the highlight was a Tucson music documentary called High and Dry. It was during this film that I was first exposed to Bob Log III.

From wikipedia:

Bob Log III is a lo-fi blues one-man band based in Tucson, Arizona. He is well known for performing in a flight helmet and singing through a telephone headset attached to the helmet. He plays slide guitar and a bass drum at the same time as well as using a drum machine and various effects.

When Bob Log III was a child, he lost his left hand in a boating accident. It was soon replaced with a monkey paw, and a new guitar style was born.

- "It's my own personal style, see," Log says, "the paw moves much quicker than a normal hand, so my real hand has to flop around a lot to compensate."

- And what about the helmet?

- "What helmet?" he asks, his voice muffled by a helmet.

If one were to look at my record collection or browse my iTunes, one might think I was a big Radiohead fan. I have all their records and a handful of bootlegs and live stuff. I think they are incredible, but actually had only seen them once that was many many years ago after Pablo Honey came out. I had another opportunity to see them a couple years back at the Field Day Fest, but the show got cancelled and rescheduled to Giants Stadium. I chose not to go as I didn't really want to make the trek to New Jersey.

So, basically, last night was my first time seeing the band. I hadn't been following the setlists, so I didn't really know what to expect. We arrived at the Greek Theater a bit late and missed openers Deerhoof. The people around me were not impressed.

Right before the show began, I was approached by a man named Michael who quickly told me that he snuck in to the show and was roaming around looking for an open seat. He ended up sitting next to me for a while and right before the lights went down said, "I saw these guys at the Hollywood Bowl in 2001 and it changed my entire concert going experience. I vowed never to see Phish again."

If that's not a glowing endorsement, I don't know what is. The show began and the entire audience was taken aback. First of all, the sound at the Greek is incredible. Even with my seats way in the back, I could hear Thom's voice beautifully and heard every bleep and bop like it was meant to be. With each new song (there were 7!) the crowd was enthusiastic and excited to hear the new material. Many of the new songs have been on YouTube or floating around the internet for sometime, but Thom Yorke said it best when he said: "This is another song you don't know. And if you do, you are cooler than everyone else."

The highlight of the show for me was the fact that they played more than half of Kid A and a great live song "Follow Me Around". "Follow Me Around" has been in their setlists for years, but have never recorded it. It sounded absolutely beautiful last night.

While many people may disagree with me, I still believe that these guys are the best band in the world and last night played like it. If you have the funds to beg and plead and buy tickets tonight, do it. It will be worth every penny.

Al Gore on the Daily Show

Last night, Al Gore appeared on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart to talk about (surprise, surprise) global warming and the climate crisis that we are currently in. If you have not seen this movie, I highly recommend you see it right away. I loved it, but then again, I drive a Prius. So, it's tailor made for people like me.

Jon Stewart:
"Tell the truth. When you do those slides when you show what could happen and you show Florida and you see how it's all almost underwater . . . When that happens . . . do you ever say to yourself . . . GOTCHA!"

Beck @ Wiltern Theater, Los Angeles

Tuesday night, I headed to the Wiltern for what I thought was one of the better live shows I had seen in sometime. The concept is very simple and brilliant. Hire a bunch of puppeteers to make marionette puppets of you and have them act out every move you do. Videotape the puppets and project it on the screen behind you.

"By planting a video camera right in front of their dollhouse of a stage, the production made them larger than life at the Wiltern — it was the puppets, not the people, that were projected on the large video screen throughout the show, moving mouths, arms and legs in coordination with the real musicians." LA Times

Not everyone loved the show though.

"On Wednesday night at the Wiltern he was downright boring. He stood on stage like he'd rather be anywhere else but there. It took him about 30 minutes to even address the audience ("I wanna thank my friends and family for coming out to the show. It's good to be home."). Apparently he needs some new inspiraton, LRH doesn't seem to be cutting it anymore. A friend once warned me against seeing George Jones ("he'll just play all the songs you wanna see in a medley"). Guess what Beck did? Lots of medleys. Did you like Midnight Vultures? He summarized pretty much the whole record into a ten minute medley? Do you like "Loser"? How about watching the recorded version lip synched by puppets? And the sound at the Wiltern is horrible. Beautiful venue. Awful sound." You Set the Scene

I agree with some of that. I am sure Beck is pretty tired of playing Loser, so I thought it was very clever of him to have the puppets perform it solo as opposed to the band doing it. I did think the sound needed some work and did have some issues hearing the lyrics. I enjoyed the medley though.

As in the last tour, Beck closed the show with the dining table bit where members sit around and eat dinner on stage before slowly building a percussion section out of glasses, plates, and silverware.

The week of greatness continues with Radiohead tonight!

As a Jewish boy growing up with a father from New York, I heard countless stories about Sandy Koufax putting his religion ahead of the team in the World Series. While I loved the story and appreciate Sandy Koufax for all he has done (both wearing a Dodgers jersey and a yarmulke), I was disappointed by the lack of Jews playing professional sports when I was growing up. There are a couple of notable Jews playing major league sports (LA Kings Center and former Wolverine Mike Cammalleri and Arizona Diamonbacks right fielder Shawn Green to name a few), but the NBA hasn't had a Jewish player since Danny Schayes left the NBA in 2000.

Well, today was a historic day for Jews and the NBA. Lior Eliahu made history today when he was the first Israeli born player drafted. He was drafted by the Orlando Magic with the 44th pick in the NBA's draft. He was then traded promptly to Houston because apparently they thought Texas would feel more like Israel.

Immediately after drafting him, ESPN analysts said he is not quite ready to make it to the NBA, but maybe in a couple of years. Sadly, I realized that my dream of a Jew playing in the NBA was far away, but then I found out that former UCLA Bruin and the 26th pick for the Lakers Jordan Farmar is Jewish!!! So, thank you to Adonai for bringing a bit of diversity to Staples next year.

Amadou and Mariam @ The El Rey Theater, Los Angeles

About a year ago, I heard of Amadou and Mariam. I am not sure how, but the album ended up on my iTunes. I listened to it a couple of times and liked it, but forgot about it.

If you haven't heard of them, Amadou and Mariam are an amazing blind couple from Mali that plays what many people refer to as "afro-blues." Apaprently, they blew the crowd away at Coachella and Bonaroo, so last Saturday I went to check them out at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles.

They perform entirely in French and wear kickass sunglasses (even indoors). Amadou is an incredible guitarist and manages to lead an amazing band regardless of sight. The crowd loved every second of the show (except for my friend Mat who barely clapped).

It was one of the more diverse concerts I had been to in a while as NPR moms were there with their elementary aged students as well as hipsters. By the end of the show, the entire place was clapping and singing along. I did my best to sing along to French. It was highly entertaining.

If you haven't seen these guys, I highly recommend checking them out. They are touring throughout the summer (they are playing BAM in Brooklyn and Central Park Summerstage in July) and their cd, Dimanche à Bamako, is available everywhere.

So, it's not that severe. Nikki is coming back. She is just taking a two month hiatus to help train the next generation of suckers. I am Dan. I live over at this blog and like Nikki, was once a former teacher who tried to show 7 year-olds the genius of Colin Meloy.

I hopefully will do a better job than Colin Quinn did, but then again, there are no guarantees.

From the schoolhouse

The walls are bare. My voice sounds louder now that the sound is no longer muffled by colorful charts and pictures. Boxes are packed full with markers, crayons, and various knick knacks. Cubbies were emptied of folders, journals, and workbooks. Families will probably cringe at the sight of all of the random items that their children will magically pull out of their bookbags. Old markers, random charts, flash cards, and books that are losing their spines. To the undiscerning eye it is trash that will end up in the trash can one day. However, to a child who is beginning their first day of summer vacation, these random items equal a year's worth of learning, exploration, struggle, and achievement. And though these things will eventually find themselves tucked under beds, lost in closets and boxes, for now these things are reminders of what has past and what lies ahead.

This was my last day in the classroom. I am content with that; however, it is always difficult to leave something that has been such a staple in one's life. My co-teacher Katie and my students made a video with my students sharing what they enjoyed about being in our classroom this year. The most memorable moment was when the classroom broke into song at the end of film. Their voices sound lovely layered over Leslie Feist's voice when they sing "Mushaboom" together. I have to admit that I cried. Shamelessly. That moment made me realize that even when I thought that no one was learning, my students internalized such a deep respect for themselves, their peers, and their teachers. Today was a sweet end to many difficult days and a multitude of successes to be proud of. Thank you to all the kids in 2-Blue. And thank you, Katie, for making this year better than good.

I like New York, but I don't like New York summers. The oppressive heat. The stagnant trash smell that hangs in air in the subway stations. The sweat that pours down your back as you wait for the train. All of these things add up to nastiness. That's the only way to put it. I think I like the idea of summer: lounging on the beach, barbeques with friends that last until the wee hours, and the unmistakable smell of sunblock. I realize that my idea of summer is an acutal reality for some of you. However, I have sticky underarms and frizzy hair to look forward to. So here's my summer dream mix.

Come Around

It's been a while since I've posted. The days have been packed full... which as I type is going to turn into the cheesiest pun since I'm literally "packing up" many things nowadays. My classroom, pieces of my apartment, and my New York City life are being packed away into boxes. Since my life has been in a whirlwind, it hasn't acutally sunk in that I'm leaving the teaching profession for a few years. Change is definitely exciting, but also scary since I feel like the only thing waiting for me is the unknown.

So, what do I do while packing boxes and spending my weekends inside putting together final grades? Revisit Snowden's The Snowden EP v.2.0. Since, you're all hepcats out there, I'm sure you have already downloaded this free EP from the band's website. However, if you still haven't added this to your staple iPod rotation, you really should. It's a simply beautifully fuzzy album with well written songs that ask you to sit a while in their melancholy. My favorite track is "Come Around," but just download the entire EP.

The Day the Heavyweights Came to School

I'm stealing my post title from Wes because it is simply the best way to put it. Casey Shea and Jeff Jacobson from The Undisputed Heavyweights played an acoustic show at my elementary school today. I'm sure it was the youngest, but not rowdiest, bunch they have played for. According to my second graders, the set was "awesome," "loud," "funny," and "so much fun." Desiree said that Casey and Jeff should "be very proud of themselves because they gave their best effort and didn't have stage fright." Although I was digging on "Latrigue," the definite highlight of the show for the kids was when Casey and Jeff played Outkast's "Hey, Ya!" Some of the kids couldn't figure out when Outkast had the time to teach Casey and Jeff that song. Hmmm?

As is usually the case at a Heavyweights show, some were pleasantly entertained...

...while others were blown away.

The show went well... except when Rafael dropped Jeff's guitar. But we won't talk about that.

There won't be any kids, but New York City can see all five Heavyweights at Rockwood Music Hall on Sunday, June 25th. The band will be recording a live EP. Hey, ya!

The "Hurricane" video was the brainchild of director Chris Levitus, who, among many other projects, directed a video for Radiohead entitled "The Big Switch", which appeared on their "Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time" DVD. The video was shot for practically nothing last August in two days, using a camera and film yoinked from the set of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel. It was directed by Levitus, and was co-directed and produced by Mike Mohan and Anthony Deptula, principle players behind Fuse TV's "You Can Awesome" and the new Kill Rock Stars DVD from The Mae Shi.

They are such rock stars now.

On Saturday night I saw Cat Power at Town Hall in New York. I adore her. I adore that she slipped on stage with her pink travel mug and serenaded us with "The Greatest." I adore the way she bunny hops across the stage and tugs at her clothing when she sings. I adore the way she applauds the band after each song and also applauds the audience. I adore the way she waves to photographers who have inched closer to the stage to take her picture. I adore the way she celebrates her sobriety and radiates triumph. I adore the way her melancholia leaves me hopeful and understood. I adore the way she seems awkward in her own skin yet so much more confident on stage. I adore the way she channels 6os backup singers when she do-wops and and shakes her hips. I adore the way she disappeared to let the Memphis Rhythm Band take center stage, and reemerged in a different, "sexier" outfit. It was a costume change that rivaled the best pop stars. I adore the way she covers "Wild As the Wind." Nina would be proud. I adore the way she waved goodbye at the end of the set and did not want to leave us. I adore the way she stood confidently in the spotlight and let us celebrate her with our applause and cheers. Someone in the audience yelled, "I love you Chan!" She signed, "I love you, too." I believe that to be true.

Before I lived in New York and found it necessary to blog about my favorite indie music, I was a little black girl growing up in the Midwest with my double-deck tape player. I saved up my loose change to buy records and tapes that I would play until late into the night. There were no blogs. There was just my diary filled to the brim with lyrics copied over and over again, and my voice howling until the wee hours of the morning. Not to toot my horn too much, but I had an impressive record and tape collection that included the Mary Poppins Soundtrack, My Name Is Roosevelt Franklin, and the cotton-candied stylings of New Edition. Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe provided the non-stop background music for countless hours of hairbrush microphone stylings in front of the bathroom mirror. Young boys schooled their listeners on the codes of wooing young girls, taking things slowly, and how to let nothing stand in the way of you and the one you love.

I have to admit that I wasn't much of a fan when Bobby Brown was replaced by Johnny Gill. You can't have a decent boy group without the "bad boy," and there's no fun in listening to a group that your mom totally approves of. I've been working two jobs lately, which has put quite a strain on my life. Many things have slipped through the cracks while others have been cut out completely. The shows that I penciled in on my calendar have been steadily crossed off and my mother leaves length messages that oscillate between pleading and threats to disown me. The one constant that has remained is the time I spend listening to my iPod. As some of you know, I spend 2.5 hours a day on the subway trains of New York. Music and a ever rotating book collection keep my commute sane and manageable. The Long Winters: Putting the Days to Bed

I am a great second grade teacher. Really, I am. But not much of an album reviewer. However, I'm going to give it a shot because the upcoming release from The Long Winters has been making me absolutely giddy.

If last year's release of the Ultimatum EP was John Roderick's idea of a light tickle in the ribs, then Putting the Days to Bed is a well-rounded album of bliss. Putting the Days to Bed opens with the melodic and crisp guitar driven track "Pushover." This song features the elements that make a track by the Long Winters stand out: witty, intimate lyrics, layered harmonies, and a smart pop hooks. Three songs in, the album hits a high moment for me on "Teaspoon." Rollicking horns push this song forward and although I'm not quite sure what the song is about, I find myself singing along. "The Sky Is Open" is a little rockier while "Honest" has the sprinkling of a country tune over jangling bells.

Yes: in a little under 40 minutes, this album put a smile on my face. Although each song doesn't break new ground, the album does neatly deliver everything that I like about The Long Winters. The harmonies, the sometimes overly shiny-happy perspective on life, and the lyrics that seem so simple but sometimes lose me in the twisted metaphors.

I uploaded a few songs by The Attorneys to my iPod ages ago, and then completely forgot about them until last week. The songs have a punchiness that cannot be ignored, and they definitely woke me up during my 6:30 am train ride to work. This band plays straight up melodic, indie power pop. If you're in New York, you can catch these Brooklyn boys at their residency at Arlene's Grocery.

A commercial break from LOST is enough time to tell you about my latest music obsession: Flying. What can I say about them? They're an amazing breath of newness. They have a lovely acoustic sound that is mingle with the rawness of found objects. Flying reminds me somewhat of The Books because their music has a scratchiness that sounds like it is being recorded in front of you. Long story short: the music is fantastic and different. I'm going to stop trying to use words to describe what I think is more than good. Listen for yourself.

Crystal Skulls has been tour for the last two months playing shows with Minus the Bear, Helio Sequence, and my personal favorite, John Vanderslice. The band is out supporting their second album Outgoing Behavior, which according to the band's website, flirts "with the soulful sway of a post-granola Grateful Dead mixed with brisk and brittle wit."

My "real" birthday is tomorrow, but I saved this past Saturday for my birthday festivities. A hungover teacher does not make for a good teacher. I spent Saturday night holed up at Mercury Lounge to catch Hockey Night and the wonder that is Ghostland Observatory.

Hockey Night played a good, energetic set. There's an element of quicky adorableness to this band that I guess only a Midwestern girl could love. There was plenty of synchronized drumming, amazing solos, and Elvis on the bells. At times, I'm astonished that there isn't more buzz about Hockey Night. There songs are a nice balance between lo-fi indie and jam-classic rock. I really enjoyed the new songs and thought the boys really brought out all the stops. However, I could have done with out the Play-Doh and panty throwing. Panty throwing? Where am I?

Last year, Dan and I saw Ghostland play at Ace of Clubs, and there were probably 20 people in the room. Saturday night, Mercury Lounge was sweaty, pumped, and packed. Ghostland Observatory played a fantastic set. There were no pink pants, but Aaron Behren's pants were as tight and as lovely as ever. He moved his body in inhuman ways while Thomas Turner played the straight man and worked assorted electronic instruments. The crowd was eating up the energy, which definitely helped to keep the show lively. There was no panty-throwing, but the night did end with Behren's jumping into the audience, not once, but twice.

Last night, I headed over to Pianos for Wes's Cross-Pollination event. The Boston band Joy and New York's Finian McKean joined together to create some of the prettiest music I have heard in a while. I'm describing the music simply as pretty because sometimes things just are. I think the vibe of Pianos' upstairs lounge

I usually use my blog to whine about the bands that I wish would come and play in New York. Funny considering all that New York has to offer, but I suppose I'm just greedy when it comes to good music. However, it looks like some of my complaining has paid off because Rademacher is slowly bringing its west coast tour east this June. I have often posted about this California band whose music makes me daydream about sinister pirates and lazy days on the beach. Rademacher wrapped up their west coast tour recently, and is now touring in support of their latest EP Heart Machine. Frontman Malcolm Sosa promises to rock hard for everyone in New York City, so make sure you mark your calendars for June 9th.

Swedish band Sambassadeur provided the backbone to my summer song list last year, and I am happy to report that sugary sweet Swedes have released their new EP Coastal Affairs. You can download the infectious pop song "Kate" and set up a little dance party in your room tonight. Coastal Affairs is only four songs long. However, if this song gives any indication of the feel of the rest of the album, then I vote for quality over quantity any day.

I've been feeling a bit on the lazy side lately, but a few tracks from the New York band Sunspots has put an edgy bop in my step. The song "Carmen" is three minutes of lovely harmonies, sharp guitars, and syncopated hand claps. Sunspots recently finished recording their upcoming EP, which is due this summer. I'm pretending that Saturday, May 13 is my birthday. My actual birthday falls during the work week, so I think it is totally appropriate to adopt an entire weekend for birthday festivities. Until today, I thought I had a dilemma: See Ghostland Observatory and Hockey Night at Mercury Lounge, or Saturday Looks Good to Me and Danielson at Northsix. But then I was reminded of the awesomeness that is Ghostland Observatory's frontman Aaron Behren, and I have decided that I will be at Mercury Lounge front and center. He wears pink pants. It finally sunk in today that this is my last year of teaching. In a way, I'm excited about taking on the challenge of graduate school. Despite the excitement that lies ahead, the leavetaking will be bittersweet. Teachers often refer to their students as "their kids" because in many ways they become an integral part of your life. So integral in fact that over the course of a year, you do become a temporary family. Some families are dysfunctional while others seem to work together effortlessly. However, in all cases, there is a magic that is built within the classroom that I think I will truly miss.

I was supposed to go to Bowery Ballroom tomorrow night to see the Two Gallants, Sam Champion, and Cold War Kids. The show sounds like it will be a lovely and amazing. I've played the crap out of the Two Gallants' What the Toll Tells and I always enjoy seeing Sam Champion. Plus, the buzz about Cold War Kids has stretched east from the west coast, and I am eager to check them out. But alas, I am not going anymore. My show partner-in-crime can't make it, so I think I will have to bow out. I realize that the last statement is a complete old lady comment, but what can I say? The idea of standing for hours alone at the Bowery Ballroom just isn't appealing right now. I know; I'm getting old.

A Hundred Miles Off, the third release from The Walkmen, is set to be released on May 23. During my subway ride today, I read the write up on The Walkmen in the Spring issue of FILTER. The article reminded me of how wonderful Bows + Arrows sounds, and how uniquely expressive Hamilton Leithauser's voice is.

There are some great mariachi horns on this song that give it a laid back, beachy vibe; you can almost smell the suntan lotion. And as we learned from "Ring of Fire," a mariachi band makes everything better.

My iBook is still broken. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

One positive result of the broken iBook is digging up the Grant Lee Buffalo album Mighty Joe Moon. This was an album that I played ad nauseum in high school, but is now tucked away in one of those monstrous CD books. The songs are stripped down and raw, so that the intensity of each song rings through. Grant Lee Phillips sings about devastation, minotaurs, and Manifest Destiny. Maybe Phillips was just prepping me for my AP U.S. History exam or to play for Team Meloy, but Mighty Joe Moon conjures a dusty past with poignancy. Twelve years later, Mighty Joe Moon has yet to lose its charm and I still feel the urge to lie on the floor and sing about John Wayne Gacy. Below are some songs so we can sing along together.

I finally finished that Journey-themed mix that Dan plagued me with. Such an onerous task, but now I feel light and fancy free. Yes, I realize that I take things way too seriously, but so it goes. As soon as I'm sure my mix club members have received my CD, I will post the tracks. In the meantime, I thought I would have some mixtape fun at Indie Don't Dance.

This idea is inspired by Mallie from the fantastic (but now defunct) blog South of Mainstream. Mallie had readers send in one song that they would like to include on a one-of-a-kind mix. Weeks later my SoM mix arrived in the mail, and I have to say that it is one of the best mixes someone has made for me. The mix is extremely eclectic since it combines divergent music tastes, and Mallie did an excellent job of weaving them seamlessly all together.

So, here goes the first Indie Don't Dance Mix put together by you and me.

I am borderline obsessed with the Iowa-based band The Envy Corps. They write indie pop songs that touch perfection. Grant it, my opinion is based on two songs alone; however, what I have are highly accessible songs with catchy melodies and smart lyrics. I listened to "Rhinemaidens" a dozen times before I finally moved on, but not without declaring it one of my new favorite songs. Honestly, at the end of the day, it's songs like these that make me hope that small bands will garner the attention that their talent deserves.

While you're out buying new music, pick up a copy of Beat Radio's Ecstatic EP. I feel the way I did about Beat Radio now as I did when I first heard a handful of their songs. The songs are simple and uncomplicated in the way that the comfortable and known should be.

Tangled Up in My Shoes

A reader suggested that I check out the Swedish band Penny Century (not to be confused with the other Swedish band Penny Century). Penny Century is nothing ground breaking; however, they do write happy, well-crafted pop songs that feature catchy female vocals. Plus the song "Tangled Up in My Shoes" features hand claps... which, you all know by now, make me weak in the knees.

The Explorers Club is a six-piece from Charleston, South Carolina, who play harmonized psychedelic pop songs that may remind you of the Beach Boys. If you download their tunes to your iPod, you can imagine these guys are a sunny Southern a capella group seranading you on your way to class.

Since my iBook is in the shop, I no longer have my music at my digital fingertips. In a good way, this has forced me to comb through my CD collection and rediscover some music that I haven't heard in a while. Yesterday, I came across a mix that my French roommate Claire had made while we were studying abroad in Edinburgh. Claire introduced me to lounging precariously in windows while drinking red wine, the painful art of waxing, and obsessing over unrequited love. All of these life lessons were set to the soundtrack of classic French songs which Claire and I listened to endlessly. With or without red wine, many of these songs are heart string tuggers.

Make every day a Division Day

Division Day is touring with Birdmonster throughout the Northwest this month, and there are plans for Division Day to come east around late summer. But I've been thinking: Wouldn't it be great if Division Day could play in New York sooner than later?

Here's what Kevin from Division Day has to say about that:

Actually, if we were able to make it happen with gear and cheap plane tix, we'd be down to fly out there and play a handful of shows, mostly around NYC but possibly stretching to DC, Boston, and Philly. To make it work we'd probably have to do a mini-tour with another band willing to let us use their drums and amps, which would be tough to negotiate seeing as we know nobody out there, but if any band who may fit the bill's name jumps to your mind, please do let me know.

If I had amps and drums, I would kindly offer them up. Unfortunately, I do not have such things. But I do have a blog. And I do have lovely blog readers. So, readers, tell your band friends that sharing is caring, and help bring Division Day to New York.

Beartrap Island comes out on April 18th. There's a copy in the mail for me, so I've been opening my mailbox with giddy anticipation lately. The album hasn't come yet, but when it does... it will be a great day.

When the night tucks you in...

Last night I saw Robbers On High Street at Mercury Lounge. This was completely unexpected, but up until that point, I had spent my night watching my friend Stephanie's uberly drunk roommate attempt to walk in a straight line. As much fun as I was having watching the aforementioned roommate sidewind down Houston Street, I was much more interested in hearing new songs by the boys from Robbers On High Street.

I saw Robbers On High Street last summer, but the room seemed more crowded last night. A packed Mercury Lounge made me smile because I think the band writes some solid songs and put on a tight show. Frontman Ben Trokan was as lovely as ever singing in that wistful reminiscing way of his. There's something about the sweet rawness of his voice that reminds me of Elvis Costello. There was also a new keyboardist who I had never seen before. The fifth member is a nice addition because it allows Trokan to remain up front instead of switching between keys and guitars.

In addition to my favorites, the band played a lot of new songs for an enthusiastic audience. The new material had fantastic beats and melodies, and felt jammier than older songs. By "jammier" I am not trying imply "hippie bad." Grant it, it was my first time hearing the new stuff; however, the new songs felt longer and broke the mold of some of the songs on Tree City. The also showed off the versatillity of each band member, and for the first time, I think bassist Jeremy Phillips really stood out to me. His bass lines were simply amazing and they captured my attention right away.

Robbers On High Street closed their set with a new song that featured a saxophone solo by Trokan that only a mother could love. After the show, I asked Trokan the name of the song, but I was too tired by that point to remember anything he said. Instant memory loss is my sign to go home, so I put myself in a cab and called it a night. Needless to say, I will have to buy the new Robbers On High Street album when it comes out because I really want to know the name of that song.

Finian McKean Contest

I apologize for the lack of post over the last couple of days. Katie and I had our laptops die and be carted off to Tekserve on the very same day. I've been without my much loved iBook for two days now. Although it seems like my bad luck with computers if repeating; however, I will not let this keep me down. Especially when it's time for: Indie Don't Dance's First Official Contest.

Finian McKean released his album Shades Are Drawn and received tons of blog buzz. Family conferences are tonight and tomorrow. Not so fun. Conferences involve me doing a lot of talking, students staring guiltily at their fingers, and various family members scratching their heads and looking confused, pleased, and irritated all at once. These are days that I dread because it also means that I won't leave the Bronx until 6:00 pm. However, tonight I am making a pit stop at Mercury Lounge to check out New Sense, Irving, and Voxtrot. There's definitely a giddy buzz in the air around this show, and I'm ready to be drowned in indie-pop dance numbers.

Final Fantasy: Arctic Circle
This is the latest from Final Fantasy's upcoming album He Poos Clouds. I like the simple sparness of "Arctic Circle." And according to Team Clermont, the song is about Dungeons and Dragons... something I know nothing about.

Hazard County Girls: InsectThe Hazard County Girls are ladies from New Orleans who show that the city still rocks. This track reminds me of The Breeders or other lovely rrriot girl stuff.

LYLAS: His Master's Merriment LYLAS is drastically different than the Hazard County Girls. Team Clermont describe LYLAS' first full-length as "exceptionally well-produced and lovely chamber pop lark that recalls Donovan (in a good way) and Belle and Sebastian."

Candy Bars: Enough to Choke a Cold Air
In case you missed this mp3 from Candy Bars the first time around. "Enough to Choke a Cold Air" reminds me of classic Grant Lee Buffalo. Remember them? It must be the lead singer's scratchy voice that is forming the connection. This song is pretty close to perfect.
